See #490 discussion.
This reverts commit 1278859d31, reversing
changes made to 0c020c98f9.
Conflicts:
pkgs/desktops/xfce/core/xfce4-session.nix (take master)
pkgs/lib/misc.nix (auto)
This removes the need to set $FONTCONFIG_FILE, which is especially
important when using Nixpkgs binaries on non-NixOS systems.
See also 9301524c50. This is a
regression caused by a change in fontconfig's configure switches.
I think at some point the unwrapped build system gcc got into the PATH,
and that breaks some cross-builds, because the configure scripts now
choose the unwrapped gcc instead of the wrapped.
I'll search when it happened and how to overcome this better.
patent has expired, so TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER is now
the default. Whether it looks better now is subjective.

This comes from:
svn diff ^/nixpkgs/trunk/@18255 ^/nixpkgs/branches/stdenv-updates/ > diff
patch -p0 < diff
and then adding into svn all files new from the patch.
trunk@18255 comes from the last time I updated stdenv-updates from trunk.

patent-encumbered hinting and sub-pixel rendering. It's disabled by
default. (Or should it be enabled by default?)

* Make builders unexecutable by removing the hash-bang line and
execute permission.
* Convert calls to `derivation' to `mkDerivation'.
* Remove `system' and `stdenv' attributes from calls to
`mkDerivation'. These transformations were all done automatically,
so it is quite possible I broke stuff.
* Put the `mkDerivation' function in stdenv/generic.
