`register_new_matrix_user` is a script provided by the matrix-synapse
package to create a new matrix user on the command line.
This commit provides a wrapper around `register_new_matrix_user` that
automatically passes the url (and `registration_shared_secret`, if
present) as CLI arguments.
Webclient only allows serving a web directory under /_matrix/client
This only incentivizes running the client under the same domain as the homeserver.
Which is not recommended due to CORS.
some options have default that are best described in prose, such as
defaults that depend on the system stateVersion, defaults that are
derivations specific to the surrounding context, or those where the
expression is much longer and harder to understand than a simple text
snippet.
Matrix homeservers have two important domains. The user-visible server_name and the homeserver domain which serves most of the traffic but is really seen by users. The docs around this variable said "This is used by remote servers to connect to this server" which is very confusing because most of the remote server traffic actually goes the server domain, not the server_name domain. (The server_name domain is only used to fetch the .well-known file that points at the server domain).
I largely copied the wording from https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/latest/usage/configuration/homeserver_sample_config.html as I found it much more clear.
Enforce UMask on the systemd unit to restrict the permissions of files
created. Especially the homeserver signing key should not be world
readable, and media is served through synapse itself, so no other user
needs access to these files.
Use a prestart chmod to fixup the permissions on the signing key.

* Moved the example how to configure a postgresql-database for
`matrix-synapse` to this document from the 20.03 release-notes.
Bumps `matrix-synapse` to version 1.4.0[1]. With this version the
following changes in the matrix-synapse module were needed:
* Removed `trusted_third_party_id_servers`: option is marked as deprecated
and ignored by matrix-synapse[2].
* Added `account_threepid_delegates` options as replacement for 3rdparty
server features[3].
* Added `redaction_retention_period` option to configure how long
redacted options should be kept in the database.
* Added `ma27` as maintainer for `matrix-synapse`.

This reverts commit 095fe5b43d.
Pointless renames considered harmful. All they do is force people to
spend extra work updating their configs for no benefit, and hindering
the ability to switch between unstable and stable versions of NixOS.
Like, what was the value of having the "nixos." there? I mean, by
definition anything in a NixOS module has something to do with NixOS...
This allows to configure additional configuration files for Synapse. This way
secrets can be kept in a secure place on the file system without a need to go
through the Nix store.
