# pkgs.mkShell {#sec-pkgs-mkShell}

`pkgs.mkShell` is a special kind of derivation that is only useful when using
|
|
it combined with `nix-shell`. It will in fact fail to instantiate when invoked
|
|
with `nix-build`.
